Welcome to the Flying Steamshovel

Along with historic Rossland BC, The Flying Steamshovel is located atop a long dormant volcano. Deemed the "Golden City", Rossland is home to Canada's most prolific goldmine, which spawned the birth of the Toronto Stock Exchange. With Red Mountain as the backdrop to its community, Rossland boasts not only world class skiing and snowboarding on one of the best fall lines in Canada, but has an abundance of opportunities for all outdoor activities catering to beginners and experts aline, just outside our doors.

Welcome to the Flying Steamshovel
  • Built in 1897 to accomodate mine workers, and originally known as "The Orwell Hotel", the Flying Steamshovel is one of Rossland's original landmarks, and still exists today!
  • Rossland has been the training ground for Gold-Medal Olympians such as Nancy Greene & Karen Lee-Gartner!
  • There are over 200 mind shafts under Rossland, some of which were still in production until late in the last century.
  • The Hotel is built on the location of the first helicopter flight in North America, three years before the Wright Brotherss "caught air"!
